Barangaroo International Towers

Barangaroo is aiming to be one of the world’s leading sustainable urban developments and Australia’s first large scale carbon neutral community.

It involves a $6 billion transformation of the former container wharf into a vibrant new financial district with world class office space, premium residential & hotel accommodation, and a wide range of retail, hospitality and public spaces. Work began in 2003 and by the end of 2017, the ‘International Towers’ (three commercial skyscrapers) and over 50 bars and restaurants were open for business. Completion of the entire project is scheduled for 2024, with a final capacity to host more than 23,000 residents and workers.

With world leading sustainability as the target, maximising energy efficiency for the towers was critical and challenging, given the many internal zones and the ever-changing heat loads on the external envelope. With this in mind, Celmec was chosen to supply the International Towers project with over 700 of their state-of-the-art Aerofoil VAV terminal units, as well as their renowned Smoke Control and modular Air Volume Dampers, all playing a big part in the final outcome.

The VAV units are responsible for varying the supply air volume to closely control temperatures in the internal office zones, and maximising energy efficiency challenged by the ever-changing heat load on the external envelope of the towers. This highly efficient air control equipment was a significant contributor towards the International Towers achieving a 6-Star Green Star Office Design v3 rating, being the highest honour, and making them Australia’s most sustainable high-rise office buildings.
